Hallmarking – the mark of quality

Most pieces of jewellery in the gallery are hallmarked.

4 main symbols make up the hallmark, these are:

  1. the sponsor’s mark which is a unique mark indicating the maker of the piece (TVH - Triinu Victoria Holman)
  2. the purity mark which indicates the precious metal content of the piece
  3. the Assay Office mark which indicates the particular Assay Office at which the article was tested and marked
  4. the date letter which indicates the precise year in which the piece was hallmarked

It is against the law to describe a piece of jewellery as Sterling Silver (or Gold, Platinum etc..) if it is not hallmarked. In particular, hallmark number 2 (see above) indicates if the piece is truly Sterling Silver (Gold, Platinum, etc..). The exceptions to this rule are pieces that are small and therefore particularly light; pieces that are made mainly of non-precious materials; and charms that are to be added to your own chains.  In the case of www.triinu.co.uk these exceptions relate to the glass heart pendants and to some of the pieces in the Silver Fingerprints Collection.
